CHRISTINA PORTER SCHOLARSHIP,
SAINT ANN'S SCHOOL
NEWS RELEASE, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2005 Brooklyn, New York
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Brooklyn NYC Council
members Leticia James and David Yassky joined the Saint Ann's School
community last Friday night, September 23, to launch the CHRISTINA PORTER SCHOLARSHIP
at Saint Ann's School. The occasion was celebrated by Christina's former
classmates, friends and families who knew her, and by others who support the
scholarship in her memory to benefit annually a needs based recipient.
The kick-off reception included an exhibition of Christina's work from
preschool to her senior year graduation, her short singing career and a film of
her theatric performances at Saint Ann's School. Christina's fellow
graduates of the Class of 2002 returned from their colleges and universities to
perform in her honor. A reprise of "Try To Remember" from "The Fantastics" by
the entire ensemble joined by James Busby and Peter Clark, Saint Ann's music
faculty, ended the concert. Christina was Luisa in a well-remembered Saint
Ann's production of the off-Broadway musical.
Marty Markowitz, Borough President, spoke affectionately of Christina and
the importance of the scholarship in her name. David Yassky, NYC Council
Member, 33rd District, supported the endeavor. Leticia James, Council Member
from Christina's historic Clinton Hill neighborhood, addressed the importance of
poetry in both public and private schools. She announced the planned
Christina Porter Poetry In The Schools project slated to begin in a middle school in
her council district in the Fall 2006, and the world premier of four of
Christina's poems for orchestra and voice on Sunday, January 22, 2006, at the
Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church in the Ft. Greene historic neighborhood of
Brooklyn.
Christina Porter, a 2002 graduate of Saint Ann's School, died following
a tragic skiing accident that occurred in her sophomore year at Dartmouth
College. Her life and her extraordinary talents in the arts have inspired her
family and friends to found several initiatives to honor Christina' memory and
to help young people.
